DeMellier ss18

New season, new DeMellier bags. These bags have struck a chord with DRG readers and I think I know why. It’s because they hit an accessible sweet spot of fashion-forward colours and shapes but with an innate practicality. Having built up this community over more than ten years, I know that you really love well-made products that have a fashion twist (as do I!).

So the two main silhouettes of DeMellier bags are tote bags and smaller shoulder or cross-body bags. I own a couple of the totes and they really are brilliantly work-appropriate. (Side note: if you’re always on the lookout for work wear inspiration, I regularly add to my work wear Pinterest board). What this mean is they’re properly designed for women who have to carry files, notebooks and tech devices. The DeMellier website actually specifies the measurements of the laptop sizes each bag can carry. This is because the founder Mireia Llusia-Lindh created the brand for executive women like her, who needed to carry their devices but wanted something stylish, i.e. not a laptop bag.

These DeMellier bags all have inner pockets for your pens, chargers and so on, so that everything is as multi-tasking and efficient as you are. The straps are designed so they’re always comfortable to hold. I especially love this new San Diego Tote (£395, above and below) with its front pocket and adjustable straps. This comes in eight varieties including one with a contrasting pocket.

The shoulder bags are great if you’re the kind of person who likes to carry a smaller bag along with her tote. I sometimes do this if I’m in back-to-back meetings all day. I’ll keep my phone (often two phones – I use my Huawei or iPhone as a social media device, while my Samsung Galaxy Note is my main phone), pens, keys and cash in my shoulder bag, and the bigger stuff in my tote. And for weekends or evenings, I think the proportions of the DeMellier shoulder bags are just right.

The Athens bag (above, £245, launching mid April) comes in grained leather or suede and can be personalised with a (jumbo!) brass initial. I like the depth of this, as it’s still compact but a little bit chunky. The San Francisco envelope bag (below, £295) is a bit bigger so more of a daytime bag; again, I love the neutral colour palette.

Or for something dressier, the Vienna (£365 below) comes in richer colours in suede or grained leather with brass hardware. A word about the leather. If you want a hardwearing bag, always go for the grained leather, it looks great and will stand up to commuter hustle and bustle. The smoother leather will mark over time, which isn’t a big issue for smaller bags but for a tote might be a dealbreaker for you.
